Getting Your Home Ready For Sale

So, you’ve decided to sell your home. Whether you are transfering, your family is growing or all the kids moved out and you don’t need quite so much space.  In order to compete with other homes on the market you need to make your home appealing to the prospective buyer.

Walk Through Your Home Like A Real Estate Buyer

There are a lot of things to think about before you start. You have to remember you’re trying to sell your home so you want it to look like a place someone could spend their life. Always remember that the buyer is making as important a decision as you.

You’re probably going to have many people looking at your home so you want it to appeal to a lot of people. There are many things you can do to achieve this.
  • First, the landscaping. The first impression a buyer is going to have about your home is when they pull into your driveway. If they see grass 10 inches tall and weeds growing up through the bushes, they’re not going to have a good feeling about living there. Now, I’m not talking about getting a complete lawn makeover. Keep the lawn mowed, trim the hedges, pull weeds, etc.. You want them to know you cared about your home as much as they will.  A really inexpensive thing to do is, if you have hedges or trees, is to put a border around them with mulch or stone chips separating the border from the lawn.
  • Now we can move inside. I always suggest painting the inside. I you have a southwest motif in your kitchen, you may like it but it may not sit right with the buyer. When painting I usually go with neutral colors like an off white or light beige. That way when the buyer looks at your house, they can decide their own colors and it makes it a lot easier to cover light colors than dark.
  • Another thing is if you have carpet get them cleaned. A dirty carpet may make the buyer think the home wasn’t cared for too well. And always keep the house clean and ready to show.
